Doug Ferrari's Recovery Comedy Show
Doug Ferrari is a stand-up comedian and comedy writer. Doug is clean and sober and in a program of recovery. Seven years ago Doug was homeless, he spent a year in Tenderloin hotel rooms trying to get treatment.
Doug won the San Francisco Comedy Competition in 1984, and has played 41 states, five countries, and been on 25 national TV shows. He has opened for everyone from Bob Hope to Robin Williams. He performs frequently at drug rehab centers, conventions and halfway houses, and is a regular at Serenity Knolls in Marin. He loves the audiences. He loves the environment. He loves doing service.
Doug's show is full of first person experience. He is healing himself and trying to help others heal through laughter. There is no preaching and no holier-than-thou attitude. It is a look at Doug's life, always with laughter, never with lecturing. He says, "How many drug addicts does it take to change a light bulb? They sold it."
Doug turns serious topics, including mental and addiction recovery issues into a laugh-out-loud (he hopes!) comedy show, not exactly like what anyone else is doing anywhere. He gets laughs from family issues, his drinking history, his drug experiences, therapy, medications, and how he is living a new life today and why it is better than where he's been in the old days. He likes to talk to young people, saying, "You don't need to do meth or cocaine, Trivial Pursuit is back and it does the same thing. It makes you stay up all night, with people you don't like, talking about shit you know nothing about."
